A recent watercolor of mine commissioned for a Grandmother from a small photo proved to be fairly difficult. This is always tricky when you have not met the people you are painting, but from the expressions of the sisters, I think / hope I captured their personalities !
This is a pastel portrait of a chief in the Congo. A big mining company bought land from him for next to nothing. He and his humble family were transformed yet still remained as close to the earth as ever.
When I mentioned to him that I would like to paint his portrait, he disappeared into his hut and emerged wearing his smart jacket and his traditional headpiece and lovely smile !
